When we hear
the word “guide”, we might think of
something that would help us or show us the path to reach something, like a set
of instructions. However, what if we receive something known as a guide and when we read it, instead of
finding instructions or something helpful, we just meet strange space creatures
living non-sense adventures? Well, basically, that is what happens to Arthur
Dent, the main character of this novel whose title is “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
Arthur Dent is
just an earthman whose house is destroyed, in order to build a highway, in
addition to this miserable situation, Arthur finds out that one of his closest
friends, Ford Prefect, is an alien and that he is part of the crew that wants to
destroy the Earth in order to be able to build the highway. Therefore, since
Arthur ends up with no place to live, he joins his friend Ford on a journey
through the Galaxy.
This journey becomes such an adventure since they drive
spaceships like Heart of Gold, visit planets
like Magrathea, and meet interesting
(and weird) personalities such as Marvin:
a depressed robot (whom I really loved), Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian,
Slartibartfast, Deep Thought, the
computer who calculates the answer to the ultimate question to life, the universe
and everything, among other characters.
In my opinion,
I can say that this is a good novel, it has some funny chapters and the plot is
very original. Nevertheless, I would not say that it attracted me a lot,
because I believe that I am not the target for such originality and strange
plot, but I do believe that it is a good novel. What I am trying to say is that
the novel is not bad, it is good, actually, but its style is not something that
would definitely attract me.
